Incredible!
The Ocean Tower condominium, which never was completed because it began sinking into the South Padre Island sands in 2008, went down in an implosion around 9 a.m. Sunday, at 378 feet 9 inches, it is the tallest reinforced concrete building ever imploded. It has been dubbed the 'leaning tower of South Padre' because parts of it have sunk a foot or more into the sand.
The amount of dynamite used to drop the structure, in its footprint, was 1,550 pounds located in 3,000 pre-drilled locations throughout the building. Over two miles of detonation cord connects them all. It took only about 12.5 seconds after the initial detonation for the 55,000 tons of steel-reinforced concrete to come tumbling down.
